Slow Filtration Basin

HOME > Guidance of usage

It is the oldest existing steel reinforced concrete building in Korea. The facilities that were actually used from 1908 to 1990 have been restored and consolidated, and is being used as the venue for experience learning. Slow filtration basin is constructed by excavating the location that is geographically lower than the surrounding areas in order for the water to flow naturally. Concrete structure was constructed on top of the basin as the root and manholes were installed on the roof in order to create natural lighting and ventilation into the basin.

Impurities in the water are filtered by passing through the approximately 80cm thick sand bed on the bottom of the slow filtration basin at the filtration speed of approximately 4m per day. The filtration speed was improved to the range of 120m~150m per day through introduction of rapid filtration format in 1922. It has been designated and being preserved as the Tangible Cultural Asset No. 72 of Seoul Metropolitan City along with the main building.
